LIFETRONIC "Living in an Anti-Matter World" An Old-Style Tribute To Commodore 64 (We all know that this intro sucks but who cares?) OLD STYLE: THE CHOICE OF THE NEW GENERATION If you include this intro on a Cd-Rom you sell or you include in a magazine, you have to send AT LEAST a copy to the authors. Please distribute this intro to all your friends. Sorry for my poor english but if I wrote this in my own language you won't be able to read this at all. Slightly Misquoted From The "DYSLEXIA" NFO where this was Slightly Misquoted from Necros Code: Crusher Graphics: Base8 Music: Dixan Sound System: MIDAS by Sahara Surfers Warning: With MIDAS 0.40a there are problems if you have an AWE 32 with some non-standard settings you will hear absolutely nothing. It happens with my SB 16 that can only play audio in 16 bits Mono with MIDAS. Quite strange... :) If you use a GUS, the tune will be played right but once it reach the loop, it will be stuck on the last note, so you'll hear a constant buzz. :( Sorry but it's MIDAS fault. Requirements: A Commodore 64 or a 386 [or better] No FPU is required 200k of free base memory [or more] Ms-Dos 2.00 [or later] A VGA card with 256k of video memory [or better] 64k of free disk space [or more] An empty bag [for vomit] A kleenex [for tears] A Soundcard would be great [Except AdLib :(] IT'S BETTER THAT YOU WATCH THIS INTRO BEFORE YOU HAVE A MEAL This demo was intended is to run almost smoothly on a 386/40 :). [It would be nice that there will be the '80386 compo' :))))) Maybe we'll organize it...]. But since I am not a so called "skilled" coder, I got lots of timing problems (Yes, in this intro timing is critical). Since the PC which should run this one on the maxiscreen was a P120, this intro was calibrated for a P120. We are so sorry. If you're afraid, then wait for Lifetronic ][ which (hopefully) wouldn't suffer from these problems. This is Crusher's very first release and the very first TBT release. Please don't blame us for the (extremely) low quality of this 64k intro :) Tested Under: No memory managers at all Himem.Sys only Himem.Sys plus Emm386.Exe Qemm v8.0 Ms-Dos 6.23b Command.Com 4Dos v5.52 THIS BABY WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY UNDER WINDOWS x.xx (any version) IT'S UNTESTED UNDER WINDOWS NT, OS/2 AND DOS-EMU FOR LINUX Note: With some efforts, this intro may be converted to a X-Windows Application. The first one that will send us a version in binary form for a SUN SPARCstation of this intro will win a free drink ! :) TBT is made up of (In Alphabetical Order): Active Members: Alcar Artist Bitstorm Coder Crusher Coder Dixan Musician Flagman Artist Ice ASCII Jazzy Musician Jova Coder Matley Musician Spirit Coder Swan Coder / Artist / ANSI Tomastik Musician Terminator Coder ZioBit Coder Read also TBT.TXT, included in this package. Little story behind this one... [Crusher Speaks] Well, there isn't much to say about this, there's something which has some priority :) I'm a 2d Coder, so don't expect some realtime phong-shaded rotating torus... But there's something joyful... If you listen very carefully to the intro-tune you'll recognize that it has three channels only ! (For you unfortunate human being who hadn't a Commodore 64: The C64 Sound Chip (SID) was capable to mix only three voices, but Commodore got wiser... the Amiga can mix only four voices and if the tune has more than four channels they are emulated via software. The least powerful Gravis card supports Thirty-Two (32) channels by hardware ! ;) Result: C64 was great, the Amiga wasn't as much as the former). However, Dixan did a great job there... Midas is great, the only two things that aren't so good are the most important ones... :( The size... about 30k, and it FUCKS VERTICAL RETRACES UP ON MY 386! (But who uses a 386/25 for demo-coding in 1997? As Randy/RJ wrote, the real coder is the one who try to make his/her routines as fast as possible on extremely slow machines. I think that my machine is slow enough to being recognized as a real coder :)))) ) I used the timer synchronization routines incuded with Midas, but it doesn't care much about my efforts... so say good-bye to smooth scrolling on slower machines... With or without them the impressive result was the same. So I took it out ! What you'll find here: Actually, besides all those beautiful palette tricks, you'll recognize: - Old-Style Original Commodore 64 Loading Sequence - Old-Style Drunk Ant Simulator [Had you ever seen a shadebob ant??? :) ] - Old-Style Random Shadebobs - Old-Style Bouncing Shadebobs - Old-Style Bookshelf Simulator - Old-Style Bumpmapping - Old-Style Bouncing Lens Deforming - Old-Style 2x2 Sinus Plasma - Old-Style Mode-x tests of mine based on the C64 Baloon - Old-Style Mode-x tests of mine based on some fractal madness and, of course, the MOST OLD-STYLE THING YOU CAN FIND... The ORIGINAL COMMODORE 64 DECRUNCHING BARS(tm) :) (Who needs copper, anyway?) If you think that's crap, you must know that if I only wanted to make a masterpiece I could rip at least a routine in every demo I got and put them all together into this one, so it would be not so crappy... Every byte of code you'll see here is made by ME and by ME ONLY. Are you starting to appreciate this work ? No ? Then you're a LAMER!!!! :) Technical info: This intro is coded 48% in asm and 52% in pascal. This one was designed with mode-x in mind but lazyness won the war, except two battles... the one with the scrolling C64 baloon and the one with the scrolling mandelbrot... some parts like line-drawing and vga-register stuff are heavily optimized (those routines ROAR) and the most CPU-Intensive stuff like PhongMap Calculating and 2D Bumpmapping aren't. Facts of life, I say. Facts of life, you agree. If you have access to the source code you'll think that I'm in love with dynamically allocated memory... And you're right, my pascal code is full of New() and Dispose() :) They help to keeping the memory requirements to the minimum [I managed to let it work in less than 200k!]... I like pointers... ;) Humorous facts: The coder was brought into neurology section in an Italian hospital after he was coding the final run of this intro... He started giving signals of mental problems after 8 hours facing the horrible truth of assembly... He lost his mental sanity... He lost his life... TBT lost a coder... More technical info: "The impossible is possible tonight" [The Smashing Pumpkins] Maybe we'll release the source code for this intro... until the official release try to bribe a TBT member... for example try to bribe me at... pippo_baudo_@hotmail.com But there are lots of ways to contact who made this masterpiece... For example you can mail the Artist at: p.luca@fastnet.it And how about the musician ? dixan@freenet.hut.fi REMEMBER: ITALIANS DO IT BETTER Thanks and Greets: Crusher must thank someone before the real show begins, and exactly: Deathstar - The magical three letters ('t', 'b', 't') in "Claudia" greets made this entry possible and also shown that... ITALIANS DO IT BETTER! :) [But 'TBT' should be written in caps...] Japotek - For being the winner of the Win'95 compo (and the only group who competed)... ;) And for the feedback when we showed LifeTronic before the votation event. It-Alien - For no apparent reasons. ;)))) I think that you need a 33.6k modem (which was the prize in the multichannel music compo) really badly ;) Dr. Kappa / Spyral - For being a Black Metal listener and for the moral support during the party. 'In Death of Gianni Versace' was great, too bad I'm only a 2d coder :(. I want that phong shaded mushroom ! ;). I didn't believe you won the 1997 Spandimerda Award :))). Enfis / Medieval - For all the stuff he did with TBT (sometimes try to be in a better mood!). Hey, boy, you have some talent and it can be seen a kilometer away. Don't waste that ! Base8 / NM - Great NM meeting in Milan, wasn't it ? I hope to see you again as soon as we can. The photos we took will be sent to you to be scanned and put in the Demo Gallery ! Sorry for the mistaken in the credits in the Party Version :( It's already fixed :), ready to be distributed... Puni / NM - Same applies as above but me and Ice are sorry for the failed nocturnal meet. If Base8 had his cellular phone turned on... Herion / NM - Cross your fingers about that joining idea. If you want I will start the NM original assembler course just for you. Please tell me. Zero Cool / Tequila - Our Porntro (Genital Hospital, ovvero Duri a Venire) will rule! [Minchia, sei fuori quanto me! Magari anche di pi—... BTW I'll bring to the party site some disks filled with some artwork for the Porntro... :) Please copy me those S. Rita S'Accascia CDs and Tapes ;) People in Milan NEED that for a better living !] Corrosion / Darkage - Great Mod. Too bad it arrived when I already got the Dixan's one. But don't worry, it will be included in LIFETRONIC ][ (Yes, there will be a sequel). Voodoo Chile / Darkage - For the permission to convert 'In Death Of Disco' and for suppling the stuff needed for the conversion. Bitstorm / TBT - For those hints about rotations... ;) Please don't use Fixed Point in C if you want to explain something ! Where have gone the good old (and understandable) floats ? Flagman / TBT - Those pics you drawn were amazing, too bad that in 320x200 or in 160x100 they look so awful :( Next time try 640x480... We aren't in the Amiga scene, so please forget that ugly 640x512 :) Ice / TBT - For his PC which was identical as the main one on the party site... Jova / TBT - For revealing me the secrets about his effects... And for the great T-Shirt he worn at the party... Matley / TBT - Like Corrosion, your Mod didn't make its way. It was blocked by the solid Dixan Mod which was stuck in the intro. :) But don't worry, I will use your tune REALLY SOON, in a thing you'll like for sure. ZioBit / TBT - Thanks for the fake loader idea... ;) I implemented it as best as I can. Sorry for the borders :( Maybe in Lifetronic ][... And thanks again for the laptop. Everyone at the TIG 1997 - You are really cool, especially: Manta/E11, Modem/DKG, Froyd/DS, Randy/RJ and the graphician/coder who got my bumpmapping source and explanations: Junta, I remember, but I'm not sure about that. Please contact me (you know who you are), we in TBT need a graphician... Quotes that emerged during the show: Killer Loop [Looking at the RIX decoder source]: "No ! Great ! You swapped the header bytes ! You're great !" [During the fake loading sequence]: -"But it should be typed LOAD"...",8,1 !" [CRUSH]-"And then why it types RUN at the end ?" -"Ok. You're right" Pellicus [During the fake loading sequence]: "Incredible, exactly emulated ! But those border bars... are they in video memory ?" Enfis [During the fake loading sequence]: "The bars, look at those bars !" Randy [After the intro]: "It's some kind of a psychological searching into every sceners' life. However, it's not pure shit." Zero Cool [After the intro]: "I looked at the other intros. Yours is definitely better." Dr. Kappa [Before the votations]: "I liked it, really. Better than Control Unit's one." "If Giovanni didn't screw up the first version..."
